Much of society today has lost the understanding and significance of the word “covenant”. We live in a generation that is seeking the truth yet unwilling to make a solid commitment. Instead, many go with the winds and waves of the most current “movement”. Many don’t have strong convictions, because everything changes with the narrative influenced by this world. We all have the potential to stray away from the truth…but that’s why God wants us to cross over into covenant…first by understanding what this really means.
To understand what a covenant is, we are to look directly to our Creator for the definition. God has given us so many examples of covenant in His written Word. He shows us that the basis of a covenant is a deep and intimate friendship, one bound by commitment, even bound by blood, in which both parties exchange their strengths and weaknesses, debts and assets, taking on a life-long decision to serve each other.
Covenant is a two way street…and should begin and end with our relationship with God. The best representation that we have of a covenant is the union of heart, soul, and body that we see in marriage. When we begin to see ourselves as the bride of Christ, married to Him, honoring Him and loving Him, then we can finally step over into the covenant blessings that He has for us. Too many often desire the blessings of the covenant, without giving anything in return.
They want the promises of God without understanding what true sacrifice, service, love or dedication is. But today is a great day to start afresh…and consecrate ourselves to the one who first loved us, who paid the highest price to restore us to a relationship with Him.
As the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, honoring God is what draws us deeper into relationship, deeper into covenant, and therefore deeper into experiencing the goodness of God in our lives. It’s not about obligation or pressure or giving in order to receive. It’s simply a pure, true, and lasting relationship, as was meant to be between God and creation from the beginning of time.
God never leaves us, and He promises never to forsake us. He is always the same and never changes. But too often, we are the ones who turn our backs on God and therefore we push Him, His voice, His promises, His protection, and His blessings away. We close the doors of our hearts because we don’t want to sacrifice certain things or change the way that we live…even knowing that specific areas of our lives aren’t honoring God. He is waiting with arms wide open today, to receive us and enter into a fresh covenant. Jesus is the bridge and the Holy Spirit is the one guiding us to cross that bridge…all to enter into an eternal covenant with our Loving Father once again.
