Spies are sent on a mission for a specific purpose: to infiltrate an enemy’s environment, obtain information, and bring said information back to the base without this breach being discovered by the opposing entity. A spy takes on many roles and is required to have extensive knowledge relating to the mission at hand.
Obligated to operate in secrecy, spies take on new identities in order to achieve their mission. Their efforts aim to serve a greater purpose and promote the common good of society or the organization they work for. Sacrifice becomes the language of war yet self-preservation is vital in order to complete each assignment. Danger is unavoidable and risk, accompanied by strategic planning, is essential.
Why does this fascinate me? Because I always dreamed of being a spy. My interests encompass multiple areas: from math to travel to medicine, athletics to art to biology, foreign lands to music to criminal investigation, code encryption to psychology to law. All of these were on my list to study and to somehow apply to one career path.
Taking all of these topics and fitting them into one mold doesn’t seem to have a logical explanation, except to become a spy, utilizing all of them to some extent…or to be an author, composing thrilling narratives with each aspect. Our interests, no matter how diverse or widespread, usually have a purpose to serve. They may not make sense initially, but there’s almost always a reason.
Surprisingly, I have found ways to incorporate many of my interests into my life…though I haven’t yet become a spy, which I think would be very exciting. I am however, on a mission, on an assignment, in the plan and purpose of God. What that assignment entails, I’m sometimes not fully aware of, but every step of the way, I discover meaning, and a reason for everything that intrigues me.
We all have a God-given purpose that is aligned with our interests, talents, and personalities. The ultimate mission is to fulfill God’s work and spread Jesus’s message as we impact others with love. In Mark 16:15 (MEV), Jesus gave us the Great Commission: “…Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
We are given specific assignments in different seasons. Though these assignments might not always involve the “action factor” found in a spy movie, they are equally, if not more important, because of the nature of our mission. People’s lives and eternities are at stake, and we are able to work with God to rescue people from the depths of hell because that’s the direction they are headed towards if they don’t come to know Jesus as their Savior.
It is necessary to complete our mission, but this first requires discovering our purpose. Once we clearly examine our talents, interests, personalities, and strengths, we are able to crack the code and understand our mission along with the reason behind our involvement in each assignment.
